The great telescope in the airy transit circle of the Royal Observatory has steep wooden steps that run up along either side of the apparatus. The steps are festooned with intricate, black lacquered spindles. One can imagine the utility of these decorative spindles as the diligent astronomers ran up and down the steep steps to tend to and position the giant oculus- only to rest there, against the hand rails, breathless, waiting.
